Joy Huerta Nominated for Tony Awards for Broadway 'Real Women Have Curves: The Musical'

Mexican singer and songwriter Joy Huerta, best known as part of the duo Jesse & Joy, has reached a new milestone in her career with a Tony Award nomination for Best Original Score for the Broadway musical Real Women Have Curves. This project marks Joy’s debut in musical theater as composer, expanding her artistic reach beyond pop music stages.

The musical is an adaptation of the play of the same name by Josefina López and tells the story of Ana, a young daughter of Mexican immigrants living in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, in the 1980s. Ana dreams of studying in New York but faces pressure from her family to work in the local garment factory. The story explores powerful themes such as immigration, identity, feminism, and the strength of Latina women.

Joy Huerta co-wrote the music and lyrics alongside Benjamin Velez, with the book written by Lisa Loomer and additional material by Nell Benjamin. The show is directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Sergio Trujillo.

Real Women Have Curves officially premiered on Broadway in 2025 and quickly gained attention on the New York theater scene. The production has been recognized by critics and received key nominations.

To give audiences a preview of the show, Joy released an EP titled Real Women Have Curves The Musical: Makin’ it Work, featuring songs like “Make it Work,” “Daydream,” “Flying Away,” and the title track “Real Women Have Curves.” The music showcases her versatility and ability to capture the emotions and struggles of a generation of Latina women.

With this project, Joy Huerta not only expands her artistic repertoire but also brings her voice and Mexican heritage to the heart of American theater, reinforcing the importance of Latin representation on Broadway.
